Internal Links for SEO

Internal links are links that go from one page on a domain to a different page on the same domain. They are commonly used in main navigation.
These type of links are useful for three reasons:
  • They allow users to navigate a website.
  • They help establish information hierarchy for the given website.
  • They help spread link juice (ranking power) around websites.
Internal Links are most useful for establishing site architecture and spreading link juice (URLs are also essential). For this reason, this section is about building an SEO friendly site architecture with internal links.

Image ALT tag, HTML img alt Attribute, image alt tags seo, search engine optimization

Definition and Usage
The required alt attribute specifies an alternate text for an image, if the image cannot be displayed.

The alt attribute provides alternative information for an image if a user for some reason cannot view it (because of slow connection, an error in the src attribute, or if the user uses a screen reader).

Note: Internet Explorer (prior version 9) displays the value of the alt attribute as a tooltip, when mousing over the image. This is NOT the correct behavior, according to the HTML specification.

Tip: To create a tooltip for an image, use the title attribute!

  1. The <img> tag defines an image in an HTML page.
  2. The <img> tag has two required attributes: src and alt.
  3. Note: Images are not technically inserted into an HTML page, images are linked to HTML pages. The <img> tag creates a holding space for the referenced image.
  4. Tip: To link an image to another document, simply nest the <img> tag inside <a> tags.

Heading Tag, Heading Tags for Better SEO, SEO Heading Tags, How-to Optimize Heading Tags

Heading Tag, Heading Tags for Better SEO, SEO Heading Tags, How-to Optimize Heading Tags

Heading Tag<H1></H1>

All search engines give great importance for the heading tag. So, if you have your keywords in heading tags, you are likely to add importance to your pages. Try to optimize keywords in all heading tags h1, h2, h3 etc.

  1. <h1>Website Design Basics<h1>
  2. <p>Here is some text</p>
  3. <h2>HTML</h2>
  4. <p>Here is some text</p>
  5. <h2>CSS</h2>
  6. <p>Here is some text</p>

Use Only One H1 Element on any page – even Google recommends this.

At Hobo we usually aim to use the header elements as explained above, and generally only reach level H3 as each page is a concise investigation of one topic. We only use one H1 element per page on most pages.

The H1-H2-H3 Tags, SEO Basics, Website SEO, Tips for SEO

The H1-H2-H3 Tags, SEO Basics, Website SEO, Tips for SEO
A lot of webpage developers use the H1/H2/H3 tags  for formatting.   Nothing wrong with this but if you talk about SEO,  these tags are very important.   These tags support the overall theme placed in the title tag.
Imagine for a moment that your webpage is an outline and the topic of your outline is the “title” of your page (the one in your title tag) and the H1 tags are your first level topics under your title.    Now H2 tags are sub topics that support whatever is in H1.
To give a example,  here’s a sample web page outline with the proper SEO use of the H1/H2 tags.
<html>
<title> Nokia N95</title>
<body>
<h1>Nokia N95 Features</h1>
<p> some intro paragraph here</p>
<h2>Nokia N95 multimedia features</h2>
<p> talk about camera, video, display features</p>
<h2>Physical Features of Nokia N95</h2>
<p> talk about physical dimensions, color, style..etc</p>
<h1>Nokia N95 Accessories</h1>
<p> talk about n95 specific accessories</p>
</body>
</html>
Notice that the overall subject and keyword being targeted is “Nokia N95″ (which is the keyword in the title).    H1 tags such as “Nokia N95 features” and “Nokia N95 accessories” all support the main subject.    Then, supporting the H1 tags are the H2 tags.
Make sure however that the supporting content which is the meat of the webpage is well written, and contains important information about your topic.   Always keep in mind what sort of information people who are searching for “nokia n95″ are expecting to find.  If within 30 seconds, they can’t find what they’re looking for in your webpage, they  would definitely leave your site immediately.

The Keywords Meta Tag, what is seo, Generating Meta Keywords

Though meta keywords tags are not a major factor search engines consider when ranking sites, they should not be left off the page. Both the meta keywords tag and the meta description tag contribute to your search engine ranking. A meta keywords tag is supposed to be a brief and concise list of the most important themes of your page. The meta keywords tag takes the following form:

<meta name="keywords" content="keywords, keyword, keyword phrase, etc.">

Search engine optimization and the meta keywords tag.Long ago in Internet time, the meta keywords tag was very useful in helping pages to win on search engines. Unfortunately, so many unscrupulous webmasters have abused the meta keywords tag that search engines have had to de-emphasize their importance. Still, you should not leave the meta keywords tag off your pages.

Meta keywords tags should adhere to the following guidelines: (1) keep your list of keywords or keyword phrases down to 10 - 15 unique words or phrases; (2) separate the words or phrases using a comma (you do not need to leave a space between words separated by commas); (3) do not repeat words or phrases; (4) put your most important word or phrases at the beginning of your list.

The Keywords Meta TagA long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the “keywords” meta tag was a critical element for early search engines. Much like the dinosaurs, this tag is a fossil from ancient search engine times.

The only search engine that looks at the keywords anymore is Microsoft's Bing – and they use it to help detect spam. To avoid hurting your site, your best option is to never add this tag.

Or, if that's too radical for you to stomach, at least make sure you haven't stuffed 300 keywords in the hopes of higher search rankings. It won't work. Sorry.

If you already have keyword meta tags on your website, but they aren't spammy, there's no reason to spend the next week hurriedly taking them out. It's OK to leave them for now – just take them out as you're able, to reduce page weight and load times.

Meta Description Tag, Meta tags, What is the meta description tag? SEO Tips

What is a Meta Description?
Meta description tags, while not important to search engine rankings, are extremely important in gaining user click-through from search engine result pages (SERPs). These short paragraphs are webmasters opportunity to advertise content to searchers and let them know exactly what the given page has with regard to what they’re looking for.
The meta description should employ the keywords intelligently, but also create a compelling description that a searcher will want to click. Direct relevance to the page and uniqueness between each page’s meta description is key. The description should optimally be between 150-160 characters.

<meta name"description" content="Here is a description of the applicable page">

Meta Description
Meta Descriptions, which are HTML attributes that provide concise explanations of the contents of web pages, are commonly used by search engines on search result pages to display preview snippets for a given page.

Meta tags, Title Tag SEO Best Practices, How-To Optimize Title Tags, search engine optimization tips

What is a Title Tag?A title tag is the main text that describes an online document. It is the single most important on-page SEO element (behind overall content) and appears in three key places:

SEO Best Practice
The title element of a web page is meant to be an accurate and concise description of a page's content. This element creates value in three specific areas (covered below) and is critical to both user experience and search engine optimization:

Relevancy
Creating a descriptive, keyword-laden title tag is important for increasing rankings in search engines. The screen shot below comes from SEOmoz's survey of 37 influential thought leaders in the SEO industry on the search engine ranking factors. In that survey, 35 of the 37 participants said that keyword usage in the title tag was the most important place to use keywords to achieve high rankings.

As title tags are such an important part of search engine optimization, implementing best practices for title tags makes for terrific low-energy, high-impact SEO tasks. The recommendations below cover the critical parts of optimizing title tags for search engine and usability goals:

Be Mindful of Length 70 characters is the maximum amount of characters that will display in the search results (the engines will show an ellipsis - "..." to indicate that a title tag has been cut off).

Place Important Keywords Close to the Front of the Title TagAccording to SEOmoz's testing and experience, the closer to the start of the title tag a keyword is, the more helpful it will be for ranking and the more likely a user will be to click them in search results (See below).

The 70 character limit is a great guideline for direct SEO benefit, but you should also remember that words that are used after that limit could also have an indirect positive benefit on search engine rankings. A lot of sites out there scrape other pages and use Title tag content as the anchor text. If any particular scraper site had some link importance (PageRank when talking about Google), then the additional words you use in the Title could help. With all that said, we still recommend the 12 word maximum overall.

Length and Keyword Usage Guidelines

Once you have figured out how to update the Title tags on your site, you will then have to determine what specific keywords you want to focus on within them. It is extremely important that every page utilizes the highest priority keyword phrase in its Title. However, you should strive to maximize the value of every Title tag by using additional keywords relevant to the page.
In general, Title tags should be no more than 12 words in length. Some SEOs will suggest using each individual word only once in a Title tag, but we recommend a more flexible maximum of two usages for any word. With that said, you should avoid repeating keywords unless you are trying to target a slightly different keyword phrase. In other words, do not repeat keywords just for the sake of repeating them. You should only repeat words if you are trying to optimize the page for multiple phrases that share some words but there is no way to string them together as one phrase.
An important point to make regarding Title tags is that Google does not have a maximum number of words that it will read in a Title – they have a maximum number of characters. That maximum number of characters is 70. Any words that end beyond that 70 character limit will not be counted as Title tag content for ranking purposes by Google. Please note that we said ends beyond the character limit. A six-letter word that begins at character 68, for example, will get cut off because it ends beyond 70 characters.

Example:
You own a site that sells Book. You have a landing page for Mazhar Made books store. You want to optimize the page for "book stores", "Mazhar Made Book Stores".
Good Title tag:
<title>Mazhar Made Book Stores: Mazhar Made Novel and Rhymes</title>

Bad Title tag:
<title>BookStore: Mazhar Made Novel and Rhymes</title>

To sum up, here are some key things to remember when optimizing a Title tag:
  • Keep the Title 12 words or less.
  • High-priority phrases should be utilized within the first 70 characters of the Title tag.
  • The maximum usage for any particular word is two.
  • Use as many high-priority keyword phrases as you can given the recommended usage limits.
  • Utilize keyword phrases in the exact way they are searched. Please note that word order is important and you should use stop words if they are commonly included in the query.
  • You should use words from additional phrases if you cannot use them exactly due to the two usage maximum. The use of "Irons" in our good Title tag above is a perfect example of this strategy. We would have preferred to use "Taylor Made irons" but could not use Taylor Made an additional time.
  • Make sure that keywords targeted in your page Title accurately reflect the topic of the page.
  • Do not utilize keywords or phrases more than once in page Titles without a specific reason for doing so.
