Google Nexus 7 ‘best-selling tablet’

Google`s first tablet Nexus 7 went on sale July 27. Its main selling point has been its affordable 159-pound price tag, The Telegraph reported.

Google Nexus 7 has become the highest selling Android tablet just three months after its launch, a media report said.

Britain`s largest mobile retailer Carphone Warehouse said it has seen a huge demand for this smaller sized, 7 inch tablet running on Android 4.1, Jelly Bean operating system.

Amazon`s new 159-pound Kindle Fire HD also establishing itself quickly thanks to its low price, according to the newspaper. The news sets up the prospect of more affordable tablets reaching the market soon.

Microsoft Tab prices start at $499

Microsoft said its new Surface tablet computer designed to challenge Apple`s iPad will be sold at roughly the same price as the market leader. The tablet will run on the Windows 8 operating system also being released October 26.

Microsoft began taking pre-orders for the Surface, which will start at $499 for US customers for a tablet with 32 gigabytes of memory. A 64GB version bundled with a black touch cover is priced at $699.

The prices are in line with the iPad, which begins at $499 but with less memory. Apple however is expected to unveil a low-priced "iPad Mini" next week.

Surface will be available October 26 at Microsoft Store locations in the United States and Canada and will be sold online in eight markets across the world: Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Britain and the United States.

Chief executive Steve Ballmer has described the iPad challenger complete with a built-in stand and ultra thin covers which double as keyboards in a range of colors as a tablet that "works and plays."

Google to sell Chrome laptop for $249

Google is dangling a low-priced laptop computer in front of consumers as rivals Microsoft and Apple prepare to release their latest gadgets.

The laptop will run on an operating system revolving around Google`s Chrome Web browser. Like other so-called Chromebooks, this laptop doesn`t have a hard drive. It functions like a terminal dependent on an Internet connection to get to information and applications stored in large data centers run by Google or other technology providers.

The lightweight computer unveiled on Thursday will sell for US$249 (S$303) and is being made in a partnership with Samsung Electronics, which also makes smartphones and tablet computers that run on Google`s Android software.

California Institute of Technology tops ranking

According to the Times Higher Education magazine, UK, which recently, published its 2012-13 World University Rankings, the California Institute of Technology has retained its place at the top of the World University Rankings for 2012-13, with Harvard University pushed into fourth place by the UK’s University of Oxford and Stanford University, which share second place.

As with last year, the US dominates the rankings, taking seven of the top 10 places. This year it has 76 institutions in the top 200 – one more than last year. But the dominance of the US masks worrying falls for many of its institutions, in stark contrast to significant gains by the top Asian universities. Of the US’s 76 top 200 representatives, 51 fell down the table in the face of mounting competition from heavy-spending Asian nations.

As with last year, India had no representatives in the world top 200. However, three Indian institutions now make the 200-400 ‘Best of the rest’ list – all Indian Institutes of Technology --- IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee.

Phil Baty, editor Times Higher Education Rankings, said: “I’d urge all Indian institutions to work with us to help build a clear picture of the rapidly changing landscape in Indian higher education. Understanding the changes, and the progress of India in converting its economic growth into a thriving innovation and skills economy – and understanding the challenges that need to be overcome – will be crucial.”

The rankings show heavy casualties of the cuts to public funding for US state universities. Key research institutions in the University of California system fell, including UC Davis (from 38th to 44th), and other significant casualties included Pennsylvania State University (51st to 61st), the University of Massachusetts (64th to 72nd) and Arizona State University (127th to 148th).

The UK, which has also been hit by public funding cuts to higher education and research, also suffered. The UK lost one of its top 200 representatives (University of Dundee) and now has 31 top 200 institutions. Nineteen of the remaining 31 top 200 institutions also tumbled in 2012-13. Prestigious institutions such as the University of Bristol (66th to 74th) and the University of Glasgow in Scotland (102 to 139th) fell.

There was a widening gap between a super-elite and the rest in the UK. Oxford improved its position by moving from 4th to 2nd, thanks to a major increase in its research income, and Imperial College London (8th) and University College London (17th) held their places. The London School of Economics (47th to 39th) and the University of Edinburgh (36th to 32nd) both improved, with LSE entering the top 40.

Another Western nation to have a bad year in the rankings was Canada, which lost a top 200 representative (Queen’s University) and saw most of its top 200 institutions slip. Canada’s top institution, the University of Toronto, lost its top 20 place with a marginal fall from 19th to 21st.

In stark contrast, universities from across the Asia-Pacific region have done well. China’s two top 200 institutions both rose, with Peking University moving from 49th to 46th and Tsinghua jumping 19 places from 71st to 52nd. Outside the official top 200, evidence from the Times Higher Education “best of the rest” table, which lists institutions from 200-400th place, also shows that other Chinese universities earmarked by the government for rapid development are moving close to the top 200. Fudan University jumped from the 226-250 band to the 201-225 group and Shanghai Jiao Tong University rose from the 301-350 group into the 276-300 band.

Thanks to strong income figures, Singapore’s two top 200 institutions saw spectacular success. The National University of Singapore moved from 40th to 29th and Nanyang Technological University rocketed up the table from 169th to 86th.

Every one of South Korea’s institutions rose up the tables, with the most spectacular improvement by Seoul National University, which rose from 124 to 59th. The country also gained a new representative in the top 200 – Yonsei University, entering at 183rd.

Taiwan’s flagship, National Taiwan University, moved from 154th to 134th.

MIT in now tops ranking university

Cambridge University has lost its place at the top of the world rankings of universities, slipping to second behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Harvard University is third, having topped the table every year between 2004 and 2009. In contrast, MIT has risen steadily up the rankings from 10th in 2007.

The list has been compiled by QS World University Rankings. “The rise of MIT coincides with a global shift in emphasis toward science and technology,” says Ben Sowter, QS head of research.

Nine of the top 10 tech-focused universities improve their position, led by MIT, Imperial College (6), Caltech (10) and ETH Zurich (13). Korea’s KAIST (63) is the biggest riser in the top 100, while Hong Kong’s HKUST (33) and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (47) continue their rapid ascent. Both were founded in the last 21 years.

As far as Indian universities are concerned, says Danny Byrne, editor of TopUniversities.com, “2012 is a mixed year for Indian universities, though two of the top three institutions manage to improve on their 2011 positions. IIT Delhi moves up six places to 212, ahead of IIT Bombay (down two places to 227). IIT Kanpur, which at 278 is the biggest Indian climber, surges up 28 places from last year to move into the global top 300 for the first time since 2010. India’s total of 10 universities in the top 700 is the same as last year, though six of these universities have moved backwards.”

He adds that a positive hint to be taken from this year’s performance is that the top three Indian universities improved their research citation rates, an area in which they have traditionally struggled. IITK is the country’s top scorer in this measure, while five Indian universities feature in the top 300. This points to some progress in the global visibility and impact of Indian research, helped by increased investments from both public and private sectors.

Universities from around the world are judged on their academic and employment reputations from a global survey, the number of citations per faculty in academic research journals, the staff-to-student ratio and the proportion of international students and staff. The results this year was based on surveys of more than 46,000 academics and 28,000 employers.

Study In Australia

Australia is a dynamic and vibrant country with a great deal to offer students looking for international education. Choosing to come to Australia to study will provide you with new and wonderful opportunities and experiences and a whole new view of the world, apart from, of course, exciting and progressive world-class education programs.

Reasons to opt for study in Australia :
Dynamic and progressive education programs with a reputation for excellence
Globally recognized courses and qualifications
A relaxed, enjoyable and safe lifestyle
Cheaper study and living expenses compared to many other countries
Great weather
Part-time jobs facility – you can support your own living expenses by working part-time

Australia a preferred choice :

Australia is a popular study destination with students from around the world wishing to gain a top-quality education. From a 2010 statistics, 469,619 international students were studying in Australia on a student visa. Of these, there were 227,230 international students enrolled in the higher education sector, which represented a growth of 7.6% from previous year.

Most of the international students in Australia study in the Higher Education sector, followed by the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector and the English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) sector.

China is the largest contributor to the higher education sector (35.5%), the schools sector (43.9%) and the ELICOS sector (33.5%), while India is the largest contributor to the VET sector (32.9%), according to the 2010 statistics. Significant growth has been recorded in student numbers from some countries like Saudi Arabia, France and the Philippines.

The field of study with the highest number of enrollments in the higher education sector was management and commerce (51.6%), while in the VET sector, management and commerce registered 42.6% of enrollments. The second largest field of study in the VET sector was food, hospitality and personal services, with 25.7% of enrollments, in 2010.

Better value for money :

Australian education programs represent great value for money. Australian courses are often considerably cheaper than similar programs in the UK and the US, meaning that international students can save many thousands of dollars on tuition fees by choosing to study in Australia.

Moreover, Australian courses are often shorter than alternatives in other countries, particularly in the US. Most Australian degree courses can be completed in three years, and even less if the education provider works on a trimester system. This means that you can save a whole year’s tuition fees if you choose to study in Australian rather than in the US or the UK.

Australia has low cost of living as compared to US or UK according to a survey. Australia’s strong economy and low unemployment rate means international students who wish to work have no problems finding a job easily, is also an advantage.

Range of courses :

English Language Studies Australia is proud of the reputation and quality of its English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) courses. The National English Language Teaching Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) works to maintain the high standard of Australia’s ELICOS courses.
Secondary Education Australia is a popular secondary school destination due to the quality and international recognition of the education offered, and the safe, caring and multicultural environment. An Australian secondary school education will provide you with skills for your future study, employment and life, in Australia or anywhere in the world.
Vocational Education & Training (VET) Thousands of courses are offered through the VET sector in Australia. Qualifications gained through the VET sector can lead to a career in a variety of diverse and exciting industries.
Technical & Further Education The TAFE sector is the largest education and training sector in Australia. It offers an extensive range of courses that cover a wide range of subject areas and provide practical skills and training for a huge variety of career possibilities.
Higher Education (university) Australia is a popular destination with students wishing to complete their higher education overseas. Many students choose Australia as their destination for university study, and Australia is fast becoming more popular than other destinations, such as the UK or US. This is not surprising when you consider Australia’s reputation for innovative, high-quality and internationally recognized courses, and the fact that many courses are comparatively cheaper than in other countries.
Study abroad & student exchange programs Australian universities have study abroad and student exchange agreements with universities from around the world. Each year, thousands of international students choose to study in Australia because of the high academic standards, lifestyle and travel opportunities.
MBA programs Studying business and management in Australia offers students the opportunity to learn in an environment that is uniquely placed between eastern and western cultures and economies. This cultural understanding, in the era of global development, is quickly becoming an important element of business success.

Learning Methods :

Studying in Australia may be very different to studying in your home country. Australian students are encouraged to be independent learners — this means that students are responsible for completing the readings, undertaking research and meeting deadlines themselves. Academic services will generally be available to help you adapt to :
fewer contact hours and more self-directed study
learning independently (or with minimal assistance)
getting less individual attention from teachers
the active and vocal style of tutorial discussions

The Australian Accent :

If you are studying at an Australian Higher Education institution, English is either your first language or you passed an English test, such as the Intensive English Language Test (IELTS). However, you may still struggle with your oral English in the first month or so of your time in Australia because of your unfamiliarity with the Australian accent. Australians use many slang and colloquial expressions in their speech. Don’t worry — you will get the hang of it eventually. A good way to get accustomed to the Australian style of speaking is to watch Australian films and TV series, listen to the radio and talk to the locals. Help yourself with list of some common slang expressions and their definitions.

Living Cost :

International students in Australia can expect to spend around $400 per week on accommodation, food, clothing, entertainment, transport, travel, telephone calls and other costs. The amount an individual will spend will, of course, vary according to factors such as lifestyle, the type of accommodation they choose and the type and location of the course they study. Typically the capital cities have the highest living costs, with the biggest cities of Sydney and Melbourne usually being at the upper end of the spectrum and the smaller cities of Adelaide, Tasmania and Darwin being the cheapest.

Quarantine Laws :

When you’re preparing to travel to Australia for studies, you need to be aware of Australia’s quarantine laws.

Electrical Appliances :

The household electric supply is 240 V 50 Hz. However the plug socket may be different so you may require to carry an adopter. Adopters may be procured from any store in Australia too.

Student Visa Requirements :

Before you apply for an Australian course you should contact the Australian embassy in your country to find out if you will be eligible for a student visa, how to make your application and what your document requirements will be.

Regardless of visa subclass or assessment level, there are a number of general requirements that international students must meet in order to be eligible for a student visa. These include requirements relating to :
health
character
health insurance
debts to the Commonwealth
custody, accommodation and general welfare arrangements for students under 18 years of age.

Global Management Degree At IIM Calcutta

In a concrete step towards globalization, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) is getting into global partnership with Confederation of European Management Schools (CEMS), which is an elite club of 28 business schools from world over except USA. The London School of Economics, HEC France, Essade Spain, HKUST Hong Kong and Richard Ivy from Canada are members of CEMS. The deal will be signed in the month of November this year.

Being a CEMS member would mean that select IIM-C students will now get the coveted Masters in Management Program degree, better known worldwide as the MIM degree which has been consistently rated as one of the five best global management degrees. The institute is modifying its two-year flagship programs so that the top 27 students can also get the MIM degree at the time of graduating from IIM-C. Students who enter from the 2013 academic year will be eligible for the new course.

A student will have to put in at least 75 hours of extra classroom contact apart from international projects that he/she will have to do to attain this double degree. This is over and above attending the IIM-C curriculum and exams.

Students would be selected for the program only after their first-year results have been declared. After completing the first term of the second year, selected students will have to attend classes for three months at a CEMS member school abroad, and return to IIM-C for the final term.

The institute will tie up with several foreign companies so that those selected for the CEMS course will complete their summer internship with them and submit the mandatory international project.

IIM-C will be the first Indian B-school to be part of CEMS. It went through a year-long vetting where IIM-C’s curriculum, teaching and examination techniques, achievements of students and placements were considered. The clinching factor for IIM-C was its focus on quantitative courses – those with a hint on operations management and finance, heavily depending on maths and statistics. That apart, IIM-C is the only one in the IIM chain to have a management centre for human values, which won it brownie points.
