HC halts National University’s bid to appoint officials

The High Court on Tuesday asked the authorities concerned of National University (NU) to postpone the recruitment process for one-month.

An HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Kazi Rezaul Haque passed the postponement order following a writ petition filed by three sacked NU staffers.

The court also issued a rule upon the authorities asking to explain within four weeks “why online appointment notice should not be declared illegal”.

An HC source said a revised recruitment notice was published on the web-site of the varsity on September 4.

On August 14, postponing the recruitment process of the National University (NU), the High Court issued a rule upon the authorities concerned asking to explain “why the recruitment notice should not be declared illegal”.

An HC bench comprising Justice Mamunur Rahman and Justice Abu Zafar Siddiqui issued the rule.

On July 23, the same HC bench issued rule upon the government to explain within three weeks why the appointment of some 650 teachers, officials at the National University without publishing appointment notice “should not be canceled”.

Education secretary, National University, VC of NU, Education Secretary on behalf of Chancellor, Treasurer and Registrar of NU and Chairman of University Granting Commission were made respondent to the rule.

On July 10, a legal notice was sent to UGC chairman, VC and Registrar of National University (NU) asking to terminate its 650 staffs recruited from 1992 to 2001.

Supreme Court Advocate M Lutfor Rahman, on behalf of former BNP lawmaker of Gazipur-5 constituency AKM Fazlul Haq Milon, sent the legal notice Tuesday.

Source said the university authorities had appointed some 650 staffs under University Act-1992 during the period of the then Awami League government without publishing any recruitment notice.

Earlier the NU authorities have sacked its 988 staffs as per High Court directive.
