4 Bangladeshis win UK Chevening Scholarships

Four Bangladeshis have been awarded Chevening Scholarships, the British government’s prestigious global scholarship programme, to study in the UK this academic year.

The Chevening scholars are Sabbir Ahmed, Shadnaz Khan, Al Asad Md Mahmudul Islam and Mohammad Saifur Rahman.

British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert W Gibson welcomed the four successful Bangladeshis at his residence here on Wednesday, reports UNB.

The High Commissioner congratulated them ahead of their departure for the UK and said, “The Chevening programme provides a unique opportunity for leaders of the future to build a global network of professional significance. It enables talented individuals to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK.”

The UK is a home to some of the world’s best education institutions, with four of the world’s top six universities, and is the study destination of choice for top international students, he added.

“I offer my best wishes to all those going to the UK to study this year. I’m delighted that so many Bangladeshi students continue to choose to study there, building relationships with their UK counterparts that strengthen the links between our countries.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Chevening programme and the British diplomat hoped that Chevening Scholarships will continue to attract the very brightest and best from Bangladesh.

Chevening scholars come from 118 countries worldwide and this year the Scholarships will support over 600 individuals.

Applications for Chevening 2014-2015 are now open and can be submitted online at www.chevening.org.
