    Orientation Program Held at Eastern University

    Private Agricultural University Getting Approval by Breaking Rules

    Bangladesh government is going to approve a private agricultural university soon. The name of that university will be Exim Agricultural University. 

    The university will be situated at Chapainobabganj. Chiarman of Exim Bank is one of the owners of the university. 

    Sources informed that, some necessary rules including submission of UGC's report have not fulfilled for the approval of this university. The university is going to get approval in political consideration, though there are several universities waiting for government's approval. 

    However, a high official of UGC said, government has ethical decision of establishing agricultural university in Bangladesh. But this university will get approval with some conditions. They have to fulfill those conditions. 

    Earlier, the university submitted application for approval with another name, but then it was rejected by UGC. By changing name, this time Exim Agricultural University is going to get approval from prime minister soon - sources informed. 

    A summary demanding approval of this university has already been sent to the office of prime minister. 

    However, officials of education ministry are saying nothing about this.

    17 Private Universities of Bangladesh are running without VC

    17 private universities of Bangladesh are running without VCs. Among them, nine universities do not have any Vice Chancellor, while another eight are being run by VCs that have not received the approval of the president. 

    On the other hand, Bangladesh University Grants Commission claims that they have nothing to do as the Private University Act allows only the President to appoint a Vice Chancellor for a four-year tenure from candidates suggested by the trustee board. 

    "The President appoints vice chancellors. There is nothing the UGC can do about it," said Professor Atful Hye Shibli, member of UGC commission to an online news media. 

    Recently, President Zillur Rahman, appointed Professor Dr. Md. Abdus Sattar as the Vice-Chancellor of North South University (NSU) temporarily on September 20, 2012.

    Earlier, the VC post was vacant since July 11, 2012 after Hafiz G A Siddiqui resigned due to trustee board conflicts. 

    Moreover, Central Women's University, International Islamic University, Presidency University, Royal University and Bangladesh University have been operating without a Vice Chancellor for quite some time. 

    The Asian University of Bangladesh has now no VC after its VC Abul Hassan Muhammad Sadek was removed by his brother Harun Mia over ownership conflicts. 

    The Dhaka International University also has no official VC as the university's proposal to reappoint Professor Nurul Momen after his tenure ended is still under consideration. 

    No Vice Chancellor has been appointed at Sylhet International University by the government as a proper trustee board has not been formed yet. 

    No new VC has been appointed at the University of Developing Alternative (UODA) since Professor Emaj Uddin Ahmed's tenure ended three-and-a-half years ago. 

    An ownership conflict sparked off at IBAIS University after the death of VC Professor Khandker Rezaur Rahman near the end of last year which has stalled the appointment of a new VC. 

    Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has not approved the appointment of a Vice Chancellor at the Metropolitan University after the tenure of the last VC, Professor Abdul Aziz, ended way back, citing unclear appointment procedure. 

    No VC has been appointed at the Victoria University for the last nine years based on allegations that it was being run 'illegally'. Recently, the university authorities have sent a proposal to appoint a VC. 

    An Acting VC has been appointed at the Atish Dipankar Science and Technology University after the tenure of previous VC, Professor Anowara Begum, ended last year. 

    The South Asian University is also being run by an Acting VC after its previous VC passed away. 

    On the other hand, there is crisis over the appointment of the Darul Ihsan University's VC, which has been operating a number of illegal branches. A judicial probe commission has been formed to address various issues of the university. 

    Among the 8 newly approved universities approved on March 13, 2012, only European University of Bangladesh and BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology have appointed Vice Chancellors. 

    Narayanganj's Hamdard University and Rajshahi's Barendra University have already submitted their proposals for Vice Chancellors, Education Ministry officials said. 

    The other 4 universities - North East University of Sylhet, First Capital University of Bangladesh of Chuadanga, Isha Khan University of Chittagong and ZH Shikder Science and Technology University of Shariatpur - have not appointed VCs yet. 

    Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid admitted that there are problems in the private universities and ministry is trying to alleviate those.

    63 candidates will compete for each seat at JnU

    Application process of 1st year honors admission of Jagannath University (JnU) under 4 faculties has ended on September 28, 2012. 

     1,73,332 candidates have submitted their applications for 2,750 seats of the university. So, an average of 63 candidates will compete for each seat at JnU. 

    The admission test of 'A' unit will be held on October 12, 2012 while admission test of 'B' unit will be held on October 19, 2012; admission test of 'C' unit on November 23, 2012 and admission test of 'D' unit will be held on November 9, 2012. 

    This year 42,234 applicants have applied for 810 seats under 'A' unit. So, 52 candidates will compete for each seat in this unit. On the other hand, 42,719 applicants have applied for 720 seats under B unit and 59 candidates will compete for each seat in this unit.  44,725 applications have been submitted for 680 seats under 'C' unit and 66 candidates will compete for each seat in this unit. 

    For 540 seats under 'D' unit, 43,654 applicants have applied and 81 candidates will compete for each seat in this unit.

    Registered primary schools to be nationalized from Jan 1

     Finance Minister AMA Muhith Saturday categorically said that the nationalization process of registered primary schools of the country will begin from January 1 next.

    The finance minister came up with the observation while addressing a programme at Ausha Registered Primary School under Sadar upazila of the district Saturday.

    He said, “The government is working relentlessly to build a well-educated nation, and distributing Tiffin and educational instruments for encouraging students.”

    The minister advised the teachers and guardians to take extra care of the children.
