'It's not fair to compare me with Sridevi' Tamannah

Sridevi wowed us with her colourful avatar in 1983's Himmatwala, south actress Tamannah will take over in the film's remake, releasing this Friday.

Not many know that Tamannah had made a quiet start in Bollywood with a small budget film in 2005 called Chand Sa Roshan Chehra. It sank without a trace.

When I reach her newly-purchased home in Versova, a western suburb of Mumbai, Tamannah is busy dressing up for the rehearsals of the grand finale of dance reality TV show Nach Baliye, held over the weekend.

As she applies her make-up and sips on orange juice, we settle down to chat about Himmatwala, her transition from southern superstar to a Bollywood newcomer, and why comparisons to Sridevi are unfair.

Even before the script was in place, the comparisons between the old and the new Himmatwala had started. What are the challenges involved in living up to the audience's expectation?

Once I was offered the film, I saw the original Himmatwala to understand what Sajid (Khan, director) really liked from it. I wanted to get the essence of the film.

Thereafter, right from the first day of the shoot, I was only following Sajid's guidance.

Manisha, who hails from an influential family in Nepal, has worked in several films. She made debuted with “Saudagar” in 1991, and recently made a comeback with Ram Gopal Varma’s “Bhoot Returns”.

Barfi! sparks debate about the portrayal of the differently abled in films

Anurag Basu's latest film Barfi!, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles, is being touted as one that can change Bollywood's perception about the abilities of the disabled. Mainstream Bollywood cinema has always found it tough to seamlessly integrate the differently abled into its plotline.

The physically and mentally challenged have been portrayed as characters that deserve to be either pitied or mocked, but hardly ever simply accepted. Films that were largely successful in integrating this section of the population with the 'normal' one were immediately tagged as arthouse cinema. But with filmmakers and actors looking to challenge themselves, the arclights have now begun to shine on the differently abled.

Barfi! tells the story of the bond between a deaf and mute hero (Ranbir) and an autistic heroine (Priyanka). When he decided to make the film, Basu was sure that he didn't want to sentimentalise the hero. "If you spend time with differently abled people, you will get over the notion that they're unhappy, suffering souls. Please don't pity them. They find happiness in the smallest of things. They celebrate life constantly. It takes normal people much longer to be happy. For me, it was a given from the start: they (the characters) had to be happy."

Barfi! is only the latest in a growing list of Bollywood films that are trying to look at characters with physical disabilities from a different perspective. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish, Black and Khamoshi, Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan's My Name Is Khan, Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par (TZP), Anupam Kher's Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara and Mani Ratnam's Guru are just a few of the more recent ones that took the stand that the disabled are actually differently abled.

League, the biggest football event in the US, as the league’s theme song.

“Priyanka is promoting Barfi! and the single simultaneously. She has decided to work on the film’s promotions during the day by attending reality shows and launches with Ranbir. Once that’s done, she will be with another team to promote her single and the music album through interviews,” says a source.

While PC remained unavailable for a comment, her spokesperson confirms, “Priyanka is managing the schedule for Barfi! and the launch of her single as both are extremely close to her.”

Being in Kashmir has made Shah Rukh Khan nostalgic as the superstar's father always wanted him to visit the valley. "My father's one unfulfilled wish was to bring me to Kashmir because his mom was from here. Now I am here, it feels I am in his big strong arms," tweeted Shah Rukh.

Nargis wants to become the desi Oprah!

Despite a dream debut with big and highly coveted Bollywood personalities like Ranbir Kapoor and Imtiaz Ali in the successful Rockstar, Nargis Fakhri hasn't gained much- beither in terms of film offers or praise for her acting. Not many producers have been forthcoming to offer Nargis Fakhri a role in their ventures. The film that worked wonders for the lead actor, did precious little for the leading lady's career.

According to Mumbai Mirror, the three film-deal that Nargis had reportedly signed with Akshay Kumar's production house Hari Om Productions even before her first film released, seems to have been called off as well. Rather the first film of the deal, Khiladi 786, has Asin as the leading lady, instead of Nargis Fakhri.

Though a friend of the actress insists that Nargis has two film offers she can't talk about right now, Mumbai Mirror has reported that the one-film-wonder already has another option in the pipeline ready.

As reported by Mumbai Mirror, if sources are to be believed, Nargis wants to venture into television.

And she doesn't have any plans to be the stereotypical sari-clad bahu of the small screen.

Nargis wants to take the high road and host a talk show.

Her intentions are noble, and she wants to help others through her imaginary talk show. When asked if it is true, she simply told Mumbai Mirror, "I want to help people, be of some service, you know. Maybe become like Oprah (Winfrey)someday."

Though some may think that television is her backup plan, Imtiaz Ali still swears by her talent.

However, sources from the industry feel that other filmmakers have failed to warm up to the US based model.

And the reasons they say, could be varied.

Mumbai Mirror reports that according to sources, apart from the criticism she received for her performance in Rockstar, the fact that she is based in the US may have worked against her film career.

Saif-Kareena to have a court wedding

With Kareena Kapoor denying converting to Islam to marry Saif Ali Khan, the possibility of nikaah between the couple seems low. However, sources have revealed that Saifeena might go the marriage registrar’s office route to solemnise their wedding.

According to media reports, Saif Ali Khan paid a visit to the Bandra marriage registrar’s office on September 12. He has submitted all the necessary papers and filed an application for marriage. The law states that the couple can choose to get married on any date after the completion of 30 days from September 12, which clearly means any day after October 11. As Sharmila Tagore has announced the wedding date to be October 16, it is evident that the actor couple will call the registrar over to Saif’s Bandra home on the chosen date to complete the wedding formalities.

Surprisingly, the Bandra court has told a newspaper based in Mumbai that they have not received any request from Saif for a home visit as yet.

Barfi creates magic at the Box Office!

The opening weekend of Barfi! has collected a total sum of Rs.34.6 crore.

The romantic comedy headlines Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor and Ileana D’Cruz. All the three actors have literally created magic on the silver screen.

While Ranbir plays a deft and mute character, Priyanka essays the role of an autistic girl, and Ileana does a rich Bengali girl, respectively.

Made with a budget of Rs.30 crore, the opening day saw a collection of Rs.9.20 crore, while Rs.11.50 crore was collected on the second day and Rs.13.5 crore on the third.

Film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted, “‘Barfi’ has done remarkable business. The film gathered steam with each passing day, rising to the maximum on Saturday and Sunday. It was released in less than 700 cinema halls in India, a tiny release as compared to the biggies. Occupancy at multiplexes was fantastic.” tweeted .

Barfi! crossed the Rs.2 million-mark over the weekend, overseas. Barfi! also beat Raajneeti and Rockstar, making it the highest grosser overseas.

Well, this is just the beginning. Barfi! still has time to earn its bucks…
