Ruet VC forced out of campus

In the face of demonstration of a section of teachers, students and staff of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet), the university's vice chancellor and his wife could not enter the campus and their residence yesterday.
The agitators stopped Ruet Vice Chancellor Prof Sirajul Karim Chowdhury and his wife at the university main gate around 11:10am, witness said.
Under the banner of "Progatisheel Chhatra-Shikkhak-Karmakarta-Karmachari Oikkya Parishad", the university's some students, teachers and staff have been demonstrating on the campus since November 16 demanding removal of the VC.
According to witnesses, the agitators also hurled epithets at the VC and his wife when they tried to enter the campus.
They also staged demonstration inside the main gate and chanted slogans against the VC demanding his resignation.
Despite repeated attempts for about an hour, Prof Sirajul Karim and his wife could not enter the campus, and later they left the area for one of their relative's house in the city, according to witnesses.
Later, addressing a rally, oikkya parishad convener, Dr Kamruzzaman Sarkar, said they would not allow the VC to enter the campus and his residence before his resignation.
The allegations raised against the VC at the rally are -- patronising of BNP-Jamaat on the campus, cancelling the result of election to Ruet teachers' association, not completing the construction work of a Shaheed Minar on the campus, and tampering with the final year result of a student.
Despite repeated attempts over cellphone, Prof Sirajul Karim could not be contacted.
