MBBS admission seekers block road for 6 hrs

Admission seekers for medical and dental colleges blocked Shahbagh intersection against the government’s decision to discard admission tests and making the GPA-based results the only admission criteria.
The students put up barricades on the busy road, disrupting traffic for six hours from 12:00pm. They withdrew the barricade around 6:00pm announcing that they would declare the next plan of action on August 27 if the demand is not met in the time.
Earlier hundreds of students have thronged before the Jatiya Press Club around noon in protest against the decision.
The government on Sunday decided to admit students into the colleges from the current academic year based on their SSC and HSC exam GPAs without holding admission tests.
The students are now awaiting a High Court ruling on an appeal filed against the decision of scrapping the admission test on Sunday.
The protest would continue if the court ruling comes unfavourable to them, the students warned at an hour-long press conference at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) earlier around 11:00am.
Putting an end to the admission test, which continued for the last 28 years, to avoid question paper leakage is not a valid excuse, the students said.
The agitated students urged the government to take steps against those who leak question papers ahead of exams and permanently get rid of this malpractice.
A memorandum stating their demand to reinstate the admission test will be submitted to the health ministry, they informed in the conference, adding that they would surround the ministry and the secretariat if their demand is not met.
Earlier in the morning, the discontented students, some accompanied by their guardians, staged a two-hour protest at Central Shahid Minar from 9:00am.
The students from different educational institutions on Monday brought out a procession in the capital's Shahbagh intersection demanding the decision's withdrawal. They also staged a sit-in in front of Bangladesh Secretariat.
