Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Scholarship

This scholarship is in honour of Dr Muhammad Shahidullah, who was passionate about education.

History: Dr Muhammad Shahidullah was the first Indian Muslim to receive a doctorate degree. He graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris in 1928 and was awarded a PhD for his research on the distiches of the Charyapada, the earliest extant specimens of Bangla language.

After completing his doctorate, he returned to Bangladesh and started teaching. In 1937, when the Sanskrit and Bangla Department was split into two separate departments, he became head of the Bangla Department. He retired from this position in 1944.
The Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Scholarship supports one student from Bangladesh and covers the tuition fees for a Masters programme at London Metropolitan University.
