DU Convocation on Mar 4, 2013 amid Jamaat Strike

Dhaka University, the country's premier educational institution, is set to hold its 47th convocation on March 4, 2013 despite the countrywide shutdown of Jamaat-e-Islam protesting at the verdict on its leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee. 'There is no point in postponing the convocation because of the shutdown,' the university pro-vice-chancellor (administration) Shahid Akhtar Hossain told news media.
More than 7,500 graduates, postgraduates and scholars will receive certificates at the convocation. President and Chancellor of the university Zillur Rahman will attend the function as the chief guest while Indian President Pranab Mukherjee as the convocation speaker. Mukherjee will also receive an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University at the convocation. Official sources said the university authority have already taken all-out preparation to make the event a success. A three-member executive committee, a managing committee and 25 sub-committees have been formed to hold the convocation.
The executive committee members are DU VC Professor Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique (head), pro-VC Professor Nasreen Ahmed, and Professor Dr. Shahid Akther Hossain and treasurer Professor Dr. Kamal Uddin. Professor Arefin Siddique told that the 47th convocation of the university will be the largest-ever convocation in its history as a huge students have registered for the mega event. "Over 7,500 students have already been registered," he said. Meanwhile, the authority started distributing convocation costumes on March 1, 2013 at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).
