An unidentified miscreant stabbed a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology on the corridor of his institute’s dormitory on Tuesday.
Critically injured Arif Raihan Dwip, a 3rd year student at mechanical engineering department, was now undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the city.
Dwip is a member of the convener committee of Buet Bangladesh Chhatra League unit. He resides at room No. 224 of Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall.
The miscreant stabbed Dwip indiscriminately in his head, back and left side of face. His left eye was also badly damaged in the attack.
Dwip received around 50 stitches in his head and back, said Pijush Kanti, a neurosurgeon of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Police pick up Zakir Hossain, a guard of the dormitory, for interrogation.
A bearded youth, age between 25 and 30, carrying a bag went to the room of Dwip around 11:45am, said Harun-Ur-Rashid, deputy commissioner (Lalbagh) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
As Dwip and his roommate Tonmoy could not identify the youth, they came down with the youth to the corridor of the ground floor.
They also decided to call seniors as they found the behaviour of the outsider suspicious.
When Tonmoy went to call seniors, the youth stabbed Dwip and fled the scene, leaving the bag behind, the DC said.
Dwip was rushed to the DMCH at first, he said.
“He was later shifted to Square Hospital,” the doctor said.
Police also recovered the bag of the youth and found a panjabi, prayer cap and a machete in it.
In January last year, Buet students staged a demonstration on the campus demanding expulsion of three students including Dwip for their alleged involvement in the assault on a senior student.
The Buet administration on January 3, 2012 expelled two of them.
