Professor Anwar Hossain on May 05, 2013 refused to resign from his position as an elected Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU). The VC organized a press conference at JU Senate Hall to address JU Teachers' Association demand for his resignation.
JUTA demanded resignation of the VC for not suspending an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League JU unit who allegedly assaulted a teacher. The association on May 04, 2013 gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the VC to step down. Professor Anwar Hossain formally apologized to JUTA for failing to keep his promise of suspending the BCL activist.
He further said teachers are misinterpreting an audio record of his speech to BCL JU unit activists on April 06, 2013. "I asked BCL to be ready to act against Hefajat-e-Islam not the teachers", said Professor Anwar. He urged the agitating teachers, who are observing work abstention, to resume classes. The teachers began work abstention on April 27, 2013 and it will end on May 06, 2013. The association will hold a meeting tomorrow to decide what course of action to take.
Meanwhile, at another press conference, Professor Sharif Uddin, JUTA general secretary, said the VC assured us on April 06, 2013 that he would suspend Razib Ahmed Rasel, the BCL activist, but later he told BCL activists that Razib had no relation with the assault. Razib allegedly attacked Nurul Haque, lecturer in economics, on April 06, 2013. The BCL denied the allegation.
