UGC Warns Private Universities to maintain admission prerequisite

University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has warned all private universities to follow Private University Act- 2010 properly and not to enroll any student at the institution who do not meet requirements set by the UGC.

The UGC has information that some private universities are taking students who do not have required grades in Secondary School Certificate (SSC), Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC), O level, A level or GED examinations.

"What some universities are doing goes against the Private University Act- 2010," UGC Member Atful Hye Shibly said Wednesday.

The letter says the UGC will take legal action against the universities that do not follow the requirements. The letter, however, did not name any university.

A number of private universities are publishing advertisements for the subjects that they do not have approval from the UGC, reads the letter. The minimum requirements set by the UGC for the admission to a private university are a second division or 2.5 grade point in both the SSC or HSC or a total of 6 grade points.

About O level and A level examinees, it says students must have minimum five subjects in O level and minimum two subjects in A level. They must have B Grade or grade point 4 in four subjects and C grade or grade point 3.5 in the rest three subjects.

In GED examination students must have 400 marks separately in five courses and on average 450 marks.
