Twitter launches Vine iPhone app

Twitter has launched a standalone video-sharing app for iPhone called Vine, which enables users to share clips up to six seconds in length, which play on a loop within tweets.

Available on Apple`s App Store as a free download, the app will come to other platforms in due course according to a blog post by VP of product Michael Sippey, introducing the app.

The app is the result of an acquisition Twitter made in October 2012 of a startup called Vine, which hadn`t actually launched its app at the time it was bought. Users of the new app are encouraged to log in using their Twitter, although it`s not a requirement.

In a separate blog post, Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann describes the aim of the new app, comparing its six-second maximum video length to Twitter`s 140-character tweet restrictions:

"Posts on Vine are about abbreviation — the shortened form of something larger," writes Hofmann. "They`re little windows into the people, settings, ideas and objects that make up your life. They`re quirky, and we think that`s part of what makes them so special."

As you can see, Vine clips automatically play when embedded in tweets, although their sound is turned off by default. The clips also play within Twitter`s official mobile app. Users can add locations to their clips – the app draws on Foursquare`s places database for that – with three options for sharing: Vine, Twitter and/or Facebook.

Why launch Vine as a standalone app rather than a feature within the official Twitter app? It`s likely the same strategy as Facebook`s Facebook Camera app: a separate app can be iterated more quickly to figure out what features work best, before integrating them back into the main app later.

Google`s $50bn year

Google reported $14.4bn (£9bn) in revenues for the fourth quarter of 2012 as the company announced its first ever $50bn year. The revenues comfortably beat analysts` expectations and were 36% higher than the same quarter last year but the firm also provided fresh evidence of how the shift to mobile is hitting the value of online advertising. "We ended 2012 with a strong quarter," said Larry Page, Google`s co-founder and CEO. "Revenues were up 36% year-on-year, and 8% quarter-on-quarter. And we hit $50bn in revenues for the first time – not a bad achievement in just a decade and a half."

Total advertising revenue improved 19%, compared with 25% growth a year ago. Google`s own sites generated revenues of $8.64bn, or 67% of total Google revenues, in the fourth quarter of 2012, an 18% increase over 2011. Google`s partner sites generated revenues of $3.44bn, or 27% of total revenues, in the quarter. This represents a 19% increase from the fourth quarter of 2011.

Google posted a quarterly profit of $2.89bn, up from $2.71bn a year earlier. Paid clicks increased 24% year on year and were up 9% from the last quarter. But this growth was tempered by a 6% fall in cost-per-click, the price paid by advertisers.

Like other businesses dependent on online ads, including Facebook, Google is finding the value of its business eroded by the shift to mobile. In the third quarter Google missed analysts` expectations by a wide margin, and its results were accidentally leaked hours early. The firm`s share price tumbled as Google warned that a growing shift toward mobile searches could hit revenues.

Google unveils faster image search

Google has unveiled a faster image search with a new layout to help people find images more quickly. Results are available in an inline panel, with the large main image in the center bordered by a set of smaller images at the top and bottom.

It has also become easier to see metadata about an image directly as it is displayed right underneath whereas before, users could only find this detailed information by clicking through to a separate page. Hongyi Li, Google’s associate product manager, wrote in a blog post: Based on feedback from both users and webmasters, we redesigned Google Images to provide a better search experience. In the next few days, you’ll see image results displayed in an inline panel so it’s faster, more beautiful, and more reliable.

You will be able to quickly flip through a set of images by using the keyboard. If you want to go back to browsing other search results, just scroll down and pick up right where you left off.


Also, the domain name is now clickable and a new button has been added for visiting the page the image is hosted on. This means there are now four clickable targets to the source page instead of just two, which in tests has shown an increase in the average click-through rate to the hosting site.


Key information such as the title of the page hosting the image, the domain name it comes from, and the image size, is now featured much more prominently next to the image.

DIU students exchange views with Norwegian media experts

A discussion and view exchange meet was held at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Daffodil International University (DIU) among two Norwegian media experts, teachers and students of the university on Thursday, said a press release.

Of the Norwegian experts, Solveig Steien, Assistant Professor and Audgunn Oltedal, Associate Professor of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies of Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences exchanged views with the teachers and students of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department at the university.

With Professor Dr M Golam Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of DIU in the chair, Syed Mizanur Rahman, Head of the Department, moderated the session, the news release added.

A number of the students of the department took part in the session and asked questions in order to be acquainted with the media system of Norway. 

Sheikh Shafiul Islam, Assistant Professor, Rashedul Hasan, Quamrun Nahar, Farhana Urmee and Syed Mahfujul Haque Marjan, lecturers of the department, were among others present in the discussion.

CU teacher suspended

The Chittagong University authorities suspended Assistant Professor of Statistics Chandan Kumar Poddar arrested on charges of allegedly abusing domestic help.

The university administration took the decision on Monday. Acting Proctor and student advisor of the university Professor Khan Tawhid Osman told banglanews that Chandan Kumar Poddar was suspended as per the direction from the vice-chancellor.

He also added: “If the allegation is proved he will be sacked.” Acting Registrar of the university Professor Mohammad Shafiul Alam said, “The university administration has got the copy of allegation. After getting the copy, university administration suspended Poddar.”

The final steps will be taken after finishing the investigation, he added. On Friday, Khulshi Thana police arrested Chandan Kumar Poddar on charges of abusing a domestic help. Later, on the next day court denied the bail petition and sent him to jail.

RU classes resume Monday

Classes at Rajshahi University (RU) will resume on Monday after 12-day long winter vacation. Administrator of Public Relations Department Professor Chittaranjan Misro told banglanews that the vacation started from January 19 while all administrative activities were remained closed from January 19 to 27. However, the administrative activities of the university would start from Monday and all classes and examinations would begin from February 2, he said.

Brunei Scholarship for Bangladeshi Students

Brunei has offered scholarship to students from its brotherly countries, including Bangladesh, to pursue higher education in different educational institutions of that country. The government of the Southeast Asian country has already invited applications from the students who want to avail themselves of the scholarship for PhD, postgraduate, higher diploma and hon's courses. 

The intending students have been asked to submit applications to the Education Ministry by February 3.

There are two times for admission in a year one is from September and another is from March (beginning class).

First Convocation of ASA University 2013

ASA University Bangladesh is going to hold its 1st Convocation in the last week of April 2013. Students who have completed their Bachelor and Master Degrees in different programs of ASAUB up to Spring 2011 are advised to register for the Convocation. Registration form is available in the office of the Registrar and ASA University website (www.asaub.edu.bd).

Patuakhali university bans BCL activities on campus

The authorities of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) on Wednesday banned all kinds of activities of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the campus until further order.

"We took the decision to ensure a peaceful atmosphere on the campus," PSTU Registrar Md Nawab Ali told our Patuakhali correspondent in the afternoon.

The decision came from an emergency meeting of the academic council, a day after 50 people were injured in a factional clash of BCL activists over submitting tender at the university.

Local business owners of Pirtala Bazar is observing a dawn-to-dusk hartal for today protesting BCL men's attack on their establishments and for injuring 20 businessmen .

11,758 primarily selected for KL jobs

A total of 11,758 candidates out of 36,038 were selected primarily for jobs in Malaysia through a lottery.

The candidates will be called for medical tests through mobile text messages (SMS), said Labour, Employment and Expatriates' Welfare Minister Engineer Khondoker Mosharraf on Wednesday.

Ten thousand workers will be finally selected following the medical check-up, he added.

A total of 3,646 were preliminarily selected from Dhaka division, while 1,279 from Khulna, 1,551 from Rajshahi, 2,287 from Chittagong, 1,361 from Rangpur, 762 from Barisal and 874 from Sylhet.

The online registration of the aspirants for jobs at Malaysian plantation sector started on January 13.

Around 14 lakh people have registered their names for jobs in Malaysia till 4:00pm on Monday.

Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) signed a joint agreement (MoU) with 'Shiksha O Anusandhan University', Orissa, India on January 20, 2013 at Northern University Bangladesh in line with educational and scientific cooperation.

Marking the end of academic life, the students of 41st Batch of the Department of English of Chittagong University (CU), arranged a Rag Day on January 15, 2013. Freshers' Orientation Program Held at Varendra University

Freshers' orientation programme for the newly admitted students of Spring 2013 semester of Varendra University (VU), Rajshahi, the only government approved private university in the northern region, was held at RUET auditorium recently. 

Presided over by the Vice Chancellor of VU Professor Osman Gani Talukder, the programme was attended and addressed, among others by Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi University Professor M Abdus Sobhan as the chief guest while Dr. Sheikh Matiur Rahman, Head of business administration department of VU delivered his welcome speech. 

RU VC Professor Dr. Abdus Sobhan said students should try to become a true educated person and not the certificate holders. To lead the nation, students should practice patriotism and honesty, he added. 

The programme was also attended by Professor Ainuddin, RU proctor Chowdhury M Zakaria, Professor Ramesh Chandra Debnath, Professor Abdus Salam, Dr. Anisur Rahman and teachers of VU from various departments. 

In the programme a total of 150 students of six departments were accorded freshers' reception. Six students were given prize for holding first positions from their respective departments during the last semester's final examination.

Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur Admission Postponed

Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur authority have postponed the admission process of honors 1st year for the academic session 2012-13. 

Earlier, the university authority fixed January 23, 2013 and January 24, 2013 for admitting the new students under 2012-13 academic session. 

The authority said they will announce the new date for admission later. 

The university is located between Rangpur Cadet College and Carmichael College in Rangpur. The university has constructed four academic building and started class from August 2011 in the main campus. Currently, the university has twenty department and amount of student is almost three thousand.
